Notting Hill Carnival

04 Sep

Notting Hill Carnival was on the weekend which is one of my favourite things about London. There is nothing like Carnival back at home in Australia – 2 days of awesome street parades, crazy sound stages around Notting Hill, and all sorts of people partying in the streets. It’s the biggest street party in Europe and the second biggest in the world after the annual Mardi Gras in Rio.

We live on the parade route so hosted a small gathering as we could view the parade from the top! This meant I could do a bit of cooking for our guests, so our day was pretty much full of food!

My favourites were the caprese bites, the reggae reggae nachos and quesadillas, chilli haloumi, and of course the brownies!

Caprese bites

These are super easy, yet super tasty. They are simply a caprese salad in one bite!

  • mini bocconcini balls (or mozzarella)
  • cherry tomatoes
  • fresh basil leaves
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • balsamic vinegar
  • extra virgin olive oil (optional)
  1. Chop each of the mini bocconcini balls and cherry tomatoes in half.
  2. Thread a piece of tomato, a basil leaf (folded if they are big) and a piece of bocconcini onto a cocktail stick.
  3. Repeat until you have used all of them up.
  4. Arrange in a bowl and drizzle over some balsamic vinegar and a grind of some black pepper.

This was round one before I drizzled the balsamic – they taste good both ways though!

Reggae Reggae Nachos

Reggae Reggae sauce is awesome! We no longer keep plain tomato sauce or ketchup in our kitchen anymore – just reggae reggae! I saw this recipe in the August edition of BBC Good Food and it’s also on their website at BBC Good Food online.

I figured it was pretty easy to take some of the same ingredients and make Reggae Reggae Quesadillas

  • Wholemeal tortillas
  • Reggae Reggae Fiery Guava dipping sauce
  • mozzarella cheese, grated
  1. Spread one tortilla with the reggae reggae guava sauce, top with cheese and another tortilla.
  2. Heat a little chilli oil in a non-stick frypan, slide the tortilla on and brown on one side then flip and brown the other. The cheese will be melted and the tortillas will be stuck together.
  3. Slice into wedges and serve.

Chilli Haloumi

This is one of the easiest party snacks I know of. It’s a staple of ours whenever we entertain and always a hit! I get a stack of compliments with these babies so give em a go!

Slice a block of haloumi cheese (I use haloumi lite) and place in a dry non-stick frypan. They will sizzle and the juices will flow out, so move them around a little and make sure they don’t stick. Brown on both sides and cut into bite sized pieces while they cook.

Meanwhile finely chop 2 red chillies and mix with some olive oil. Up to you how much, but enough to be able to drizzle over the haloumi. I like to use chilli-infused olive oil so it’s got an extra kick!

Mix through the haloumi and serve with cocktail sticks so your guests don’t burn their fingers.

Sweet potato falafels

I got the idea for these from Leon – they are super tasty in their wraps so I thought they would make a good finger food. I made them the day before the carnival and heated them up on the day so I think they dried out a tad, but were still tasty. We dipped them in tzatiki but I think aioli would have been better.

I used the fab Leon cookbook, but the recipe is available on The Guardian’s website.

Hummingbird Brownies

The recipe from the Hummingbird Bakery cookbook is the best one I have tried. And believe me, I have tried many! They always come out moist and fudgy – just the way I like em!

Ingredients for 12 big, or more smaller pieces:

  • 200g dark chocolate, broken up into small pieces
  • 175g unsalted butter
  • 325g caster sugar
  • 130g plain flour
  • 3 eggs
  1. Preheat the oven to 170c, Gas Mark 3.
  2. Place the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir occasionally until thoroughly melted, then remove from the heat and leave to cool slightly.
  3. Add the sugar and stir until well incorporated, then add the flour and do the same.
  4. Stir in the eggs until thick and smooth.
  5. Pour into a baking tray (I have a proper brownie tray, but Hummingbird recommends a 33cmx23cmx5cm tray) and bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until they are flaky on top but still soft in the centre.
  6. Leave to cool completely before attempting to turn them out, otherwise they will break and you will end up eating all the broken pieces! Cut into small pieces when cool

Veggie Frittata

I have made this up based on a bunch of recipes. You can pretty much use any veggies you have to hand. I used:

  • 6 eggs
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 2 red chillies, chopped
  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 1 courgette (zucchini), sliced thinly
  • 1 carrot, sliced thinly
  • 1 red pepper (capsicum), sliced thinly
  • a small handful of fresh parsley
  • olive oil
  • cheddar cheese, grated
  1. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan, add the garlic, chilli and onion and soften
  2. Add the courgette, carrot, pepper and cook until golden. Add the parsley and mix through
  3. Beat the eggs and season with some salt and pepper. Add to the pan and cook, moving the egg around until the base is set.
  4. Sprinkle some cheese on top and then slide under a hot grill until puffed and golden.
  5. Allow to cool and then cut into bite sized pieces. You can serve hot or cold depending on what you prefer.

Borough Market, London

10 Jul

Borough Markets in London has to be one of my favourite places in this city! It is a specialist food wholesale and retail market and every time I go I discover something new and tasty!

IMG_3353

I love to wander around and sample the delights of all the stalls and then make special purchases for whatever tickles my fancy. There are cheeses, jams, vinegars, olive oils, chocolates, baklava, cakes, breads, pastries, juices and smoothies, coffee and wines, the list goes on!

 IMG_3357  IMG_3354

IMG_3356 IMG_3348

I like to think I have figured out the best approach for a foodie market like this. First up, if you arrive hungry I think it’s better to try and  hold off buying lunch until you have done a good lap of the market so that you can identify which stall you will buy your main breakfast/lunch from. Otherwise you will most probably make a purchase and shove it down only to later see a better option around the corner resulting in a massive case of food envy!

One of my absolute faves has got to be the HEAVENLY HALLOUMI burger from The Veggie Table. These babies are so delicious I find myself getting one every time I visit. They are grilled and then popped into a wholegrain bun with salsa and optional hummus and pesto, or topped onto a mix of the uber healthy salads on offer which usually change each time. Just go and get one!

IMG_3367      IMG_3363

Another fave would be the brownies. Now I am a massive fan of brownies and I like to think I have sampled quite a range over the years, but two of the best can be purchased from Borough. The first is the heavy, fudgy and moist delight from the Cinnamon Tree Bakery stall inside. It’s diets off for these bad boys! They also mix in choc bits for that extra indulgence! The other is a Boston brownie from the shop Konditor and Cook outside the market on Stoney Street. These babies have fresh cranberries baked into them that just goes so well with the rich chocolately brownie. yum yum yum!

Coffee lovers queue for ages at Monmouth Coffee coffee who serve up a range of beans which you can also purchase by weight.

The quality of fresh produce is fantastic – check out the juiciness of the tomatoes…

IMG_3350

Something new I picked up this time was Truffle Balsamic Glaze. We sampled this winner with fresh bread, but it can be used on cheese, poultry, risotto and pasta. It’s a thick balsamic glaze with the richness of truffle – something to break out when we are feeling posh I think!

IMG_3441

And Artisan du chocolat have a little stand where you can pick up a mixed bag of choccies at the special Borough market price of £2! My fave is the Madagascar.

Geez, I LOVE this place!

If you live in London and you have never been – what are you waiting for? And if you ever visit London – make sure the market is on your list! Saturdays are always the busiest, so if you can, head down there on a Thursday or Friday instead. There are usually bargains to be bagged later in the day as vendors try to get rid of the last of their fresh stock. Bon Appo!

  1. Taste Festival, London Regents Park

Top 5 from the good food and wine show, Sydney.

05 Jul

The Good food and wine show is one of my favourite days of the year. I was so excited this morning I was running through the car park giggling. I put an alarm on my phone so I would know the day tickets went on sale and when that day came in February I was happy to score 2nd row seats for Matt Moran. Last year we saw Pete Evans at 9.30am and it was so crowded when the show finished so this year we thought we’d get there early and go to a later show and this worked out heaps better. Being the last day of the show alot of people had specials on their showbags, some offering two for $10. I ended up with about 10 showbags. We had to make a few trips back to the car to drop them off. Opening them all up and lining up everything on our coffee table (1st picture) was a great way to end the day. You can see the little LG teatowel on the bottom right of the photo. I caught that at the beginning of the show by the ends of my fingertips. Not as great a prize as the cookware and wine that other people won but hey at least I won something.

Well I lost count of how many different chocolates, wines, nuts, muesli’s, cheeses, chai tea and liqueurs’s I tried but I have selected the following as my top 5 new products of the day.

Number 1: Ayam Sago dessert

This easy to make Malaysian dessert is a taste sensation. You simply have to add some coconut milk and chill for 10 mins.

Number 2: Butlers hot chocolate drink

This is a box of 10 chocolates that melt when added to hot milk. Divine!

Number 3: Bill’s Beetroot marmalade

This is from a Tasmanian guy called Bill. He served this with some Salmon and it was sooooo tasty. He gave me a lil flyer that also suggests having it with Pork chops, rocket and goats’ cheese salad and lamb parcels. I will probably regret not getting the larger bottle. Check out his website http://www.tgkitchen.com/

Number 4: Amoy’s Shrimp Shamoi & Hargow

I am still craving dim sims since Yum Cha last Sunday. These lil beauty’s are a taste sensation and are super easy to make. 1.5 minutes in the microwave if you are too impatient to wait for the steamer basket. I got 4 packs for $10 and will probably regret not getting more of these too. I hope I find a stockist close to me.

Number 5: Red quinoa

The new superfood. I haven’t tasted this yet but since I know it has more protein than any other grain I have a feeling it’s going to be great. I have tried white quinoa before and it was really easy to make, pretty much just like cous cous. I was also given some recipes so I will make another post when I try making sweet quinoa which is like porridge.

There was heaps of other things I tried today that I didn’t buy coz they had sold out, but now I know that Market Pride Silver Warehou & Atlantic Salmon fish cakes are sold in DJ’s so I will have to buy some soon. There was also a really tasty berry muesli I got from a lady in the Blue Mountains. Definately worth mentioning. One of the fun surprises we got was the chocolate and strawberry milk flavouring straws. Wish these were around when we were kids. Well it’s time to get the kitchen reno done so we have somewhere to store all of our purchases.

Taste Festival, London Regents Park

22 Jun

Just spent the day at London Regent’s Park for the Taste Festival– such a good day! There were so many dishes to sample, wines to taste, chefs to watch and goodies to try and buy!

We purchased a bunch of ‘crowns’ – the currency of the festival which is just confusing – why can’t you just pay with ££’s, and studied the menu guide to see which sample dishes from some of London’s top restaurants we would try.

Prepare yourself…this may make you salivate!

First up was char-grilled chilli garlic black cod and prawns from Dinings. The black cod was so tender and juicy and the chilli and garlic flavour packed a punch – such a good combination!

IMG_3300

Next we tried the ‘Cape Sante’ from Theo Randall– Scottish scallops with rocket, chilli, parsley, datterini tomatoes and lentils di Castelluccio – AMAZING! So many people saw us enjoying this one and asked where it was from – such a winner! The scallops were so juicy – something I only ever eat if I know it’s going to be good and this didn’t disappoint!

 IMG_3303

Something I have been wanting to try ever since I saw that episode of Jamie’s Kitchenwhere he grows and cooks his own courgettes/zucchinis, is a courgette flower. Salt Yardwere serving one up stuffed with goats cheese and drizzled with honey. I wish I could cook these babies and maybe one day I will try, but after stuffing the flower with the goats cheese, they are dipped in a light batter and fried so when you bite into the flower the goats cheese is all hot and runny and then you get the hit of honey to top it off  – awesome!

IMG_3304

The aroma coming from Kai Mayfairdrew us to their stall where we saw they were cooking up wasabi prawns – tiger prawns with a spicy wasabi mayonnaise served with little cubes of mango and Thai basil. These were little gems! I wonder how many you would get if you ordered it as a main in the restaurant?

IMG_3305

While we were in the Thai section and on a roll we gave into some all-time favourites from Blue Elephant… raw mango salad made of green mango in a crushed peanut, roasted brown coconut and tamarind sauce; and a green chicken curry – both pretty good and confirming that Thai cuisine is a sure fire hit!

IMG_3306 IMG_3308

Now in the mood for some sweetness, we opted for a strawberry and hibiscus bellini which was served with a warm strawberry and vanilla doughnut from The Ledbury. The creamy layer on top then turned to juicy chunks of strawberry and was perfectly matched to the warm doughnut – unbelievable!

IMG_3310

The festival is such a good day out – you can grab a drink (there was a stand making giant mojitos!) and just chill on the grass in the sun for a bit…

IMG_3315

There was also a bunch of exhibitors selling their goods and letting people ambush them for samples…

IMG_3323 IMG_3324

In search of a chocolate fix, but wanting to try a selection we decided on two! First up was the chocolate crumble with cocoa bean custard from The Grill at the Dorchester. The top layer was really creamy, then there was a chocolate mousse and on the bottom was a firmer chocolate layer. The crumble on top was nice and crunchy!

IMG_3311

And then came the winner of the day – ‘Le chocolat sensation’ – au chocolat araguani glace au chocolat ivoire et biscuit oreo from L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon- this delight had smashed up oreo cookies on top of chocolate ice cream with a chocolate sauce all around it and some white chocolate edible props! Defo #1 of the day – such an indulgence! Maybe one day I will get to dine in the actual restaurant!

IMG_3317

In an effort to support some of the exhibitors I purchased some souvenirs – a spice meal kit for paneer veg and masala chicken (which seems like a super business idea) from The Meal Kit Company, and a small box of choccies from Ooh La La Chocolaterie

IMG_3332 So pretty aren’t they?!
