Miremont Patisserie in Biarritz, France

04 Aug

It’s no secret the French really know how to create exquisite pastries, cakes and breads, so before leaving for Biarritz I made sure I did a bit of research to find out what the patisserie situation would be. As you can imagine I was pretty excited by what awaited me at Miremont.

It’s a traditional tea room in downtown Biarritz that all started in the 1800s. They specialise in traditional recipes of pastries (the most decadent pain au raisin ever to touch my lips), chocolates, cakes (I should say gateaux), and even ice creams and sorbets.

Walking inside, I was quickly reminded of the Laudree tea house in Paris. There are many similarities from the rows of cakes all perfectly lined up, to the font used on the menu.

A hot tip – if you want to be able to make your selection from the widest range – arrive early! Once they’re gone for the day, they’re gone!

Our first trip there was quite early so I was able to take a walk up  and down the displays admiring all the cakes in their glory before making a decision. Between the three of us, we decided on a chocolate éclair, a chocolate and raspberry tart, and a chocolate macaroon. The chocolate and raspberry tart was my favourite – the marriage of chocolate and raspberry is just a match made in heaven! The tartness of the raspberry perfectly complements the intense dark chocolate.

A second visit was required, this time opting for a plain chocolate tart (decorated with a gold leaf) and a glazed raspberry and pistachio slice. The chocolate tart was delicious and very similar to the chocolate and raspberry one from the previous visit, but needed that raspberry kick. And I’m not too much of a fan of glazed things, so I didn’t steal too much of Chris’ raspberry slice, but it was still pretty good.

Tinks purchased some pretty handmade chocolates flavoured with earl gray tea which were quite glorious – and priced accordingly!

Miremont also serve lunch made up of things like finger sandwiches and salads, but I think it’s definitely the place for all things sweet! The tea selection looked pretty good, but we never made it that far!

Visit Miremont at 1 Bis, place Clémenceau 64200 Biarritz. Open every day from 9am to 8pm.
